I am a health economist and Professor (joint tenure) in the Department of Sociology and Department of Health Sector Management and Policy at the University of Miami, with secondary appointments in the Department of Economics and Department of Public Health Sciences. I am also Director of the Health Economics Research Group in the College of Arts and Sciences, Research Director of the Health Sector Management and Policy Program in the School of Business Administration, and a Senior Fellow of the Center for Health Sector Management and Policy.

Health economics

Health economics is a branch of economics concerned with issues related to efficiency, effectiveness, value and behavior in the production and consumption of health and healthcare. Externalities arise frequently when considering health andhealth care, notably in the context of infectious disease.


Economics of crime

The economics of crime focuses on the effect of incentives on criminal behavior, the way decisions interact in a market setting; and the use of a benefit-cost framework to assess alternative strategies to reduce crime.


human resource economics

Human resource economics is a term that is used to describe the collective strategies and approaches that seek to address the utilization of labor within the workforce and how that utilization has an impact on the greater economic well-being of a nation or other locality. 


criminology

The scientific study of crime as a social phenomenon, of criminals, and of penal treatment.


health policy

A behavioral health policy is an official statement by a government or health authority that provides the overall direction for mental health by defining a vision, values, principles and objectives, and by establishing a broad model for action to achieve that vision.


econometrics

Econometrics is the application of statistical and mathematical theories in economics for the purpose of testing hypotheses and forecasting future trends.
